Women In America

Winter 2011

Equal Rights Amendment Debate

Format

Each team will have an opening statement (3 minutes). The floor will then open for questions. Each student is required to ask a question of the other team. Each team will then regroup for a closing statement.

Pro ERA: Consider the following questions

Why is the ERA necessary?

Would the ERA guarantee equal treatment of women?

Should State Legislatures be asked to consider ratification, 21 years after the deadline has passed?

What are the arguments in favor of an Equal Rights Amendment?

Anti ERA: Consider the following questions

Why would the ERA not guarantee equal treatment of women?

Why is the ERA not necessary now?

What are the arguments against the passing of the ERA?

Question for both groups to consider:

Would the ERA provide additional legal support for women beyond the Equal Pay Act (1963), Titles VII and IX of the Civil Rights Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the 19th Amendment, and decisions on the 14th Amendment? Why or Why not?
