Final Research Paper

Overview

Your final assignment in this class will be an independent research paper that applies what we have learned about conflict resolution, the international legal system, and post-conflict reconstruction to a region that has recently emerged from conflict. 

This paper will present an overview of the situation in your selected post-conflict region followed by an analysis of current reconstruction strategies and finally, your own opinion on the best path forward.  Your paper will be divided into three sections.

Section 1: The Conflict

Focus on the recent history of the region, focusing on the causes and course of the conflict, as well as the end of the conflict.

Section 2: Reconstruction

Focus on the current system of reconciliation, successes of this system and current problems in this process of rebuilding.  Areas of reconciliation might include disarmament/demilitarization, government reform/elections, trials, truth commissions, reparations/compensation, education, security and memorialization.

Section 3:  Policy Suggestions

Focus on what still needs to be done and make three specific policy recommendations that will lead to a more stable and peaceful future for this region.
